Some 800 refugees from Syria and Afghanistan are arriving on the Greek island of Chios per day. Between 50 and 60 are packed onto inflatable boats, women, children, pregnant women and young men. It has been estimated that 120,000 refugees have arrived on those islands closest to Turkey this year alone. The journey from Turkey to the northern coast of Chios takes about 5 hours. Those who arrived this day had walked for three days across Turkey from Syria before making the sea crossing. An area of coast some 400metres long is littered with the slashed rubber boats that have been sunk immediately on arrival to prevent the refugees from being sent out to sea again, life vests and tyre inner tubes, and clothes abandoned on arrival.
